JCLS – Intergenerational Wellness & Sports

Intergenerational Wellness Intake 2 – Now Open for Applications

Dr. Karen Kobayashi, University of Victoria, 1967 — 2022

International Wellness is a program stream of the Community Fund. It originates from the advocacy work of sansei community activists, and from the voices of bold young leaders across Canada. As an original program subset of seniors health and wellness, IG Wellness was first championed by Dr. Karen Kobayashi to the BC Government in 2021. Karen did not live to see the results of her advocacy work. In her honour, and in honour of our elders past and present, we continue this work.

Intergenerational Wellness Intake 2 – Applications Now Open
Following the first round of applications in Intergenerational Wellness, over 100 families received funds for projects which are now underway. Based on feedback from the first intake, we have modified application forms and revised guidelines to clarify and streamline the application and adjudication process. Notably, the budget template has been integrated into the online application form and is more user-friendly.

Families impacted by Government policies and actions of the 1940s are encouraged to apply for up to $5,000 for Category 1, Family Sharing and Healing, for projects tied to the core value of family healing, sharing and intergenerational trauma. Eligible sharing activities may include, but are not limited to, self-published books, self-made art projects, digital scrapbooks, reflective storytelling, oral histories, family genealogy, internment camp tours, and family counselling. JCLS staff are able to help with questions regarding the application process.

Organizations and groups can apply for up to $10,000 for Seniors Intergenerational Group Wellness grants (Category 2). Organizations and groups can also apply for up to $40,000 ($10,000 for Unincorporated Japanese Canadian Groups) for Intergenerational Group Gatherings – projects that support group gatherings that address historical trauma (Category 3).

Application results out June 28, 2024

Category 1 & 3 projects must be completed by September 30, 2025

Early-bird Applications
Families seeking grant funding for projects that involve travel during summer 2024 are encouraged to submit their project applications as early as possible. This will allow the Project Office to process and bring forward applications for assessment on a rolling basis prior to any travel taking place.

Already Completed Projects
The Intergenerational Wellness Fund is unable to fund projects that are already complete prior to applying. Likewise, projects that are complete prior to being assessed will not be eligible for funding.

Should you have any questions regarding your projects and grant agreements, please contact the Intergenerational Wellness Program Manager Chika Buston at healing@jclegacies.com or by phone at 604.760.7650.

Sports Open – Intake 2

A second intake for Sports funding is now open. In addition to Elite/High-Performance Athletes, who can apply for up to $5,000 in funding, High-Level Athletes can now apply for up to $2,500 in funding. Applicants who were not funded in intake 1 are encouraged to re-apply in the second intake.
