Team Orange is a Japanese Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour-supported loose network of volunteer groups in Japan that promote activity and wellness in seniors and their families through services aimed to help prevent or cope with dementia. Team Orange advocates that seniors themselves should be at the center of organizing volunteering activities, because that itself is preventive and therapeutic by giving seniors a reason to go out, purpose, and opportunities for communication and social interactions, all of which have protective benefits against dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

To introduce this concept in Canada, the Japanese Medical Support Network (JAMSNET) Kiyoshi Dembo created the Dementia Strategic Fund team with Momiji Health Care Society geriatric nurse Yuka Okada, and three new staff, Atsumi Nakao, Chiharu Schaeffer, and Mariko Nishi with funds received from the Public Health Agency of Canada in June 2023. In the following 10 months, the team organized workshops and educated 733 Japanese community members in 10 Canadian cities about dementia inclusivity and awareness, and how to provide helpful assistance to people living with the condition.<\/p>\n

While the program officially ended in March 2024, we will continue the dialogue on dementia-related support in the Japanese community in Canada at https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/team-orange-canada\/<\/a>.
