NAJC Welcomes Caroline Ruriko Ishii as Executive Director
CALGARY, AB — May 30, 2025 — As Asian Heritage Month comes to a close, the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) is marking the occasion not only as a celebration of heritage, but as a stepping stone toward renewed growth, sustainability, and leadership within the Japanese Canadian community. In this spirit, the NAJC is proud to announce the appointment of Caroline Ruriko Ishii as its new Executive Director.
Caroline will lead the execution of the NAJC’s strategic plan and operations, advancing the organization’s capacity to better serve Japanese Canadians nationwide and supporting equal rights and liberties for all persons – particularly racial and ethnic minorities.
A third-generation Japanese Canadian, Caroline’s family was among the nearly 22,000 Japanese Canadians who were forcibly uprooted, interned, disposed and displaced during World War II. This injustice continues to fuel her commitment to justice and human rights.
Caroline is a strategic leader with expertise in cultural preservation, community building, communications, and equity. She has advised key public, private, and not-for-profit organizations, including the Canada Council for the Arts, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Bell Canada Enterprises, Global Affairs Canada, and the International Red Cross.
An award-winning chef, speaker, and author of three books—including a forthcoming memoir on her family’s internment—Caroline’s years living in Japan deepened her understanding of her heritage and inspired her commitment to building cultural bridges between Canada and Japan.
“We are excited to add Caroline Ishii to the NAJC team as our new Executive Director, with her wealth of leadership experience across government, arts, and advocacy,” said Les Kojima, President of the NAJC. “Kevin Okabe, who has served as our Executive Director since 2018, will be transitioning to a new role as Implementation Specialist in support of our Capacity Building Initiative, and will work alongside Caroline and other staff recently added to augment the team.”
The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), established through the Japanese Canadian Redress Agreement, recognized the moment’s significance. “Caroline Ishii’s appointment is deeply meaningful for the CRRF,” said Mohammed Hashim, CEO of the CRRF. “Her leadership reflects the legacy of redress and the importance of inclusive leadership. It’s a reminder of how justice and representation can shape a more equitable future for all Canadians.”

The National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) represents the Japanese Canadian community. It was founded in 1947 with its main objectives to strengthen the Japanese Canadian community and advance human rights. The NAJC played a lead role in getting the federal and BC governments to acknowledge and to redress the wrongs committed against the Japanese Canadian community during and after World War II.

2025年5月30日 — カルガリー発 — アジア文化遺産月間（アジアン・ヘリテージ・マンス）の締めくくりにあたり、全カナダ日系人協会（NAJC）は、日系カナダ人の歴史と文化を祝うとともに、コミュニティの持続可能な発展とリーダーシップ強化に向けた新たな一歩として、石井るり子キャロライン氏を新たな事務局長（エグゼクティブ・ディレクター）に任命したことを発表いたします。
石井氏は、NAJCの戦略計画および運営の実行を主導し、カナダ全土の日系人コミュニティへのサービス提供を強化するとともに、人種的・民族的マイノリティを含むすべての人々の平等な権利と自由の擁護を推進してまいります。
日系カナダ人三世である石井氏の家族は、第二次世界大戦中に約22,000人の日系カナダ人とともに強制移動、収容、財産没収および追放の被害を受けました。この歴史的不正義は、石井氏の人権と正義への強い信念の原点となっています。
石井氏は、文化継承、コミュニティ形成、広報、そして公平性の分野における豊富な経験を持つ戦略的リーダーです。受賞歴を持つシェフであり、講演者、著者としても活躍。これまでに3冊の著書を出版し、近日刊行予定の最新作では家族の強制収容体験を回顧録として綴っています。また、日本での長年の生活経験を通じて、自身のルーツへの理解を深め、日加間の文化的架け橋を築くことに情熱を注いでいます。
NAJC会長のレス・コジマ氏は「政府、芸術、アドボカシーなど幅広い分野での豊富なリーダーシップ経験を持つ石井キャロライン氏をNAJCの新たな事務局長として迎えられることを大変嬉しく思います」と述べています。2018年より事務局長を務めてきたケビン・オカベ氏は、新たに設けられた『キャパシティ・ビルディング・イニシアティブ』を支える実行担当スペシャリスト（Implementation Specialist）として、引き続き石井氏および新たに加わったスタッフと共に活動を行ってまいります。
また、日系カナダ人補償協定を通じて設立されたカナダ人種関係財団（CRRF）も今回の発表に賛同の意を示しています。CRRF最高経営責任者のモハメド・ハシム氏は「石井キャロライン氏の就任は、CRRFにとって非常に意味深いものです」と述べています。「彼女のリーダーシップは多様性と包摂の重要性を体現しており、すべてのカナダ人にとってより公平な未来の可能性を示しています。」
全カナダ日系人協会（NAJC）について
NAJCは、1947年に設立された日系カナダ人コミュニティを代表する団体です。主な目的は、日系コミュニティの強化と人権の平等の促進です。NAJCは、第二次世界大戦中および戦後に日系人に対して行われた不正義に対し、連邦およびブリティッシュ・コロンビア州政府の謝罪と補償を実現するための中心的な役割を果たしました。
