Japanese Canadian artists and Japanese Artists living in Canada
NAJC GEI : Art Symposium Sept 16-18, 2022

The first national multi-day symposium of Japanese Canadian artists and Japanese artists living in Canada will take place in Greater Victoria September 16-18, 2022. Marking the 80th anniversary of the Japanese Internment, the 2022 symposium will be a resonant return to the West Coast in which we will be welcomed into the stunning new Gorge Park Pavilion.

The GEI : Art symposium is in the style of a NATIONAL BLOCK PARTY – a community driven celebration – for artists of every discipline with the central artistic question:

“What is worth passing along in our artistic community?”

Our artist-run community-building event intends to:
-Counteract the historic planned suppression of a Japanese Canadian artistic community
-Honour some of the trailblazers of our artistic community
-Generate purposeful sharing between artistic disciplines and generations
-Invigorate the ongoing evolution of the Japanese Canadian cultural landscape

We have the funding to support SIXTY out of town artists to join artists from our host city as well as with some of the most celebrated Japanese Canadian artists in the country.

We are committed to representing diversity in artistic practice, by region, and by career stage.

The selection process will be informed by the national response to the Submission of Interest and will be shared with all of those who submit.

Free to submit, there is a $200 registration and workshop fee for selected participants.
